It’s good to see that students in the borough could from September 2015 have more choices for continuing their education – that is if two secondary schools are given the go-ahead to open sixth forms. With only five schools currently having sixth forms, most students going into higher education only have the choice of attending some of the very large colleges in the area. Colleges offer a very different experience to school sixth forms and it suits some students far better than it does others. College students arguably require a greater level of self-discipline as they are expected to organise their own free time for studying. In school sixth forms, the day is more structured and regulated. But for students who have thrived within their school at GCSE, and forged relationships with staff and other students, it is a crying shame if they are unable to continue their development in an environment of familiarity. Choice is what matters.
