Comments on supermarkets abandoning big stores in favour of smaller 'local' outlets fail to note an obvious advantage to them.

Big stores are subject to Sunday trading laws and can only open from 10am to 4pm or 11am to 5pm on Sundays. This was intended to protect small independent stores.

By opening local stores, supermarkets are able to open for the whole of Sunday and take the custom of the independent stores.
