BOB Cameron, Sundridge Park's resident professional golfer, has been celebrating after winning the Glenmuir National Club Championship.

The event held at the Saunton Club, in Devon the 25th ranked in the classic links' courses nationally was contested by around 140 other players.

Cameron, from Sidcup, is no stranger to success in the Glenmuir-sponsored event, having won it in 2000 at St Andrews and coming second last year when the championship was staged in Co Louth, Ireland.

Cameron, who is 49 and has been the resident professional at Sundridge Park Golf Club for the last 17 years, made a great start to the four-round tournament with a five-under par 66.

He then shot a one-over par second round 72, but recovered brilliantly by carding 67 in the third round to head the leaderboard by four shots going into the final day.

Cameron said: "I made a wretched start to the final round when I bogeyed the first three holes."

That disastrous start meant that Cameron soon found his four-stroke advantage had evaporated when playing partner Graeme Bell and the eventual runner-up, John Dwyer from Co Meath, joined him at the top of the leaderboard.

Cameron added: "I just could not hit the fairways, but I remained calm and a super birdie at the 207-yard 17th gave me the edge.

"I holed a 20-foot putt and then a solid par at the last gave me a one-shot victory."

Cameron, who ended with a four-under par 280 four-round score, already has a top tournament booked for 2003.

He will be travelling to Florida at the end of next February to play in the PGA Cup, being held at the Port St Lucie course.

He added: "It is a tournament run along the same lines as the Ryder Cup, with singles and fourballs played over three days.

"Bill Longmuir, from the London Club near Brands Hatch, is also representing the 10-strong Great Britain and Ireland squad."
