With London Underground today passing into the control of the Mayor and Transport for London, commuters have been warned not to expect dramatic improvements.

Ken Livingstone said he was delighted London Underground was finally in control of the city's elected government.

But the Mayor warned major improvements would not be "delivered overnight" and said the Public-Private Partnership financing made managing the Tube more of a challenge.

“But I have brought the best transport managers in the world to London and am confident that Bob Kiley and Tim O’Toole will deliver the best possible service for London.” Suzanne May, Chair of the London Transport Users' Committee (LTUC), said the future of the Underground had finally been settled, after years of arguments.

"A massive amount of work will be needed bring the Underground up to 21st century standards. TfL faces the difficult challenge of overseeing this work while trying to maintain a reasonable service for existing users."
