KENT County Council (KCC) plans to reorganise its education department to create 23 new school clusters.

Schools are currently arranged in 14 sections but after the shake-up, effective from the beginning of the academic year, there will be 23 smaller groups made up of teams.

The announcement has been met with concern by teaching unions who fear there may be redundancies.

Around 30 staff from County Hall’s cognition and learning service have already been earmarked for potential redundancy.

A KCC spokesman said: “These clusters are intended to encourage schools to work together and share expertise.

“If staff at one school specialise and staff at another are weaker, they can pool resources to help each other out.” The council said it was too early to say where, if any, other redundancies would be.
