AN ITALIAN man faces jail after being found guilty of indecently assaulting a woman by groping her.

Carmelo Calafiori, aged 20, of Leonard Road, Beckenham, was one of a group of men who surrounded the woman and her friend at the Astoria GAY nightclub in Charing Cross Road, London, on March 3.

Bow Street Magistrates’ Court heard on June 25 how Calafiori had put his hands behind the 20-year-old woman while another man held her by the waist.

The woman, who cannot be named, told the court: “He put his hand up my skirt from behind and the other one held me by my waist.” She broke free and moved to a dancing spot on a podium, where he again put his hand up her skirt.

Calafiori told the court he had been dancing with the woman and touched her body. He said he had gone to the nightclub before leaving the country for Italy.

The court heard two male friends accompanying the woman intervened and Calafiori left the scene. At the end of the night he kissed the victim and touched her bottom.

Deputy district judge Mr Quintin Purdy ordered pre-sentence reports and granted Calafiori conditional bail until July 21.
