Old Whitgiftians 22

KCS Old Boys 22

One of the best games of rugby seen at Croham Road for some time saw the Surrey League One leaders, KCS OB score in injury time to earn a draw and maintain their position at the top of the table.

The Whitgiftians deservedly scored a good try after 10 minutes when Tuppen went over from short range, the conversion being made by Pearce.

Five minutes later a forward drive was well supported by the half-backs and Pearce went over for a try, which was not converted. The only other score of the first half was an OW penalty kicked by Pearce.

The second half saw KCS raise their game and, with the slope and increasing wind behind them, they scored two tries in the first five minutes to get within three points. This led to a period of KCS dominance with only heroic tackling by the whole OW team, but particularly by the back-row and the half-backs, holding them at bay.

In a rare visit to the KCS half the OWs took advantage of a mistake and Dougan, who had come on for the injured Dempsey touched down.

A KCS penalty reduced the gap to seven, but a missed OWs penalty in injury time would have clinched a win.

KCS touched down under the posts for an easy conversion and a draw.
