A MAN with severe depression died under a train at Watford Junction station, an inquest heard on Monday.

Mark Renwick, 22, of St Thomas' Drive, Hatch End, died when the 75mph express struck him as it passed through platform eight at the station.

Witnesses described to St Albans Coroner's Court how the supermarket worker climbed onto the track and ran towards the London-bound train at 7pm on January 13.

Train driver Stuart Furness said: "I blew the whistle, but there was nothing I could do. I lost site of him and there was a loud bang."

Richard Murray, who was on the platform, said: "I noticed someone out of the corner of my eye. I looked down the track and he was moving between the rails.

The court heard that Mr Renwick, who had tried to commit suicide on three previous occasions, was being treated for body dysmorphic disorder, a mental illness which makes sufferers abnormally preoccupied with a real or imagined defect in their physical appearance.

The jury returned a verdict that Mr Renwick had killed himself while suffering from a mental illness.
