SUPPORT is growing for the Bucks Free Press' petition to implement road safety measures which aim to prevent a repeat of the 2001 Amersham Hill tragedy.

Angry readers are pledging support for our sister paper's campaign to pressure Buckinghamshire County Council into introducing stringent safety measures along the High Wycombe section of the A404 which could help put an end to the crashes, collisions and deaths on Crendon Hill.

Businesses situated on what has become known as "Horror Hill" are displaying posters for the campaign which follows another crash on May 23, a heavy goods lorry's brakes failed, sending the vehicle careering down the road smashing into parked cars before coming to a halt in Easton Street.

However, people were not so lucky on June 14, 2001, when a lorry ploughed into Aitchisons Estate Agents killing staff member Maggie Doel and customer Sally Jamieson.

Buckinghamshire County Council has been looking at making safety improvements on the hill for the past two years but blamed its lack of progress on not receiving enough Government funding.

Many people and have contacted Midweek to add their own ideas to the growing campaign.

Former mayor, Alan Hill, of Deeds Grove, High Wycombe, told Midweek: "They are on about all those hi-tech signs to say 'select low gear,' but this nonsense would cost thousands of pounds.

"Would it not be easier to put signs on the A404 near the Hazlemere crossroads, banning lorries over seven tonnes from travelling on down the hill?"

Highways chiefs have proposed installing flashing lights north of Amersham Hill Drive to warn HGV drivers to select a low gear for the steep hill.
