A massive blaze ripped through the Waitrose supermarket in North Finchley early this morning (Monday, June 2).

Twenty fire engines - the maximum that could be allocated - attended the store in Ballards Lane from stations across Barnet.

The fire, which has destroyed the store's roof, started at around 6.15am and was still burning four hours later. Staff working on the early shift spotted flames in the warehouse and fled the building, calling the fire brigade shortly after. Nobody was believed to have been injured.

The costs of repairs and the cause of the fire are still to be determined.

It follows the fire at the Waitrose store in Whetstone High Road seven years ago, which was described at the time as being the biggest fire in Barnet for 20 years.
