As a long-term Barnet resident, I say congratulations to Mayor Melvin Cohen on his appointment (Meet the mayor', May 29). As a fellow Jew, I wish him a hearty mazel tov.
But, and there's a big but, how dare he say 'my background is Jewish and Jewish people tend to support the Conservative Party'?
That there is no such thing as the 'Jewish vote' has long been obvious and he has only to look in the House of Commons and the House of Lords (from Lord Janner down) to see how wrong he is.
I have news for Mayor Cohen. In the 50 or more years that I have been of voting age, I have never voted Conservative, nor can I see myself doing that for the rest of my life. If he is that unreal about his fellow Jews, how can we assume that he is well informed about the majority of people who live in the borough of Barnet?
