LETCHWORTH 19 TWICKENHAM 37

Twickenham have struggled so far this season but were driven by a scintillating performance from fly-half James Clark who helped inspire an unexpected and comfortable win.

Victory looked far from the cards when a huge Letchworth pack dominated the first 20 minutes and T's yielded two soft tries.

Both were converted to see T's go 14-0 down and playing catch-up - a position they have found themselves in often this season.

T's opening points were scored by James Clark with a penalty which were followed by second a few minutes later.

Then occurred the move that galvanised T's. From a set-piece 20 metres out, the ball went to Clark who dummied three opposition backs to go in under the posts. His own conversion meant T's had clawed back to 14-13 at the interval.

T's looked a powerful all-round out-fit in the second half and any spectators would wonder why they are languishing at the bottom of the league.

Despite the large weight deficit they held their own in the scrums, and the pinpoint accuracy of Chris Tytherleigh's lineout throws to Jeremy Davies along with back row support created the ideal platform for the backs.

The backs held onto everything and ran Letchworth off the park. Bruce Guyett picked up two tries and scrum-half Jimmy Peters collected the other.

James Clark converted all three tries from far out, and added a further penalty to bring his tally for the match to 22 points.

Twickenham scorers: tries - Guyett 2, Peters, Clark; pens - Clark 3; cons - Clark 4.
