A HARPENDEN student is planning a gap year in Paraguay where she will work as a carer in a local orphanage.
Danielle Lucas is a sixth former at Sir John Lawes School in Manland Way and has volunteered with GAP Activity Projects, a charity that arranges voluntary experiences for young people opting to take a year out before going to University.
Danielle said: "I want to do something constructive with my year off and experience a completely different way of life and culture from that in Harpenden.
"I hope that I will be able to help others while gaining valuable experience myself."
The 18-year-old will either live in the orphanage for her six-month placement or stay with a local family. All she will be given is food and accommodation during her entire stay.
Danielle is aiming to raise a minimum of £2,000 to fund the trip and has so far organised a sixth form Christmas party that raised £300 and secured a bursary from Herts Education Foundation for £500.
She is eager to hear from anyone who would like to sponsor her and can be contacted via the school's e-mail at admin.sirjlawes@thegrid.org.uk.
