February 20, 2001 9:47: MENTAL health services for people in Bexley have moved to Sidcup.

With much of Bexley Hospital about to be demolished, the Oxleas NHS Trust has opened a new unit at Queen Mary's Hospital.

Leyton and Camden wards, which cater for older people with mental health problems, and Millbrook and Lesney wards, which provide acute mental health care for people aged 18 to 65, have become the new Woodlands Unit.

The unit also includes activity and physiotherapy rooms, a courtyard and a garden. Many patients will have their own bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

Sleeping and bathing arrangements are single-sex, and there will also be more assisted bathrooms and toilets.

The new unit is part of a £14m development scheme to replace the facilities at Bexley Hospital.

The hospital site is being redeveloped as an urban village but some parts of the hospital will remain, including the Oxleas Trust headquarters.
