TALK about getting the hump!

It's about time the powers-that-be made up their minds about these infernal traffic calming measures - speed humps.

They can't have it both ways.

In an effort to keep the peace they go for `middle-of-the-road' bumps - that is they are neither one thing nor the other.

They are too small to really make motorists slow down, but large enough to wreck suspension. Now, I can already hear the wails of perfect drivers - "If you drive too fast, then you deserve to damage your car".

But, the fact of the matter is simple. If you really want to cut speeds build the sort of humps that are really felt. Of course, traffic flow will suffer as a result but that's the price you have to pay.

And, as for this nonsense of just putting a 3 foot hump in the middle of one lane, that's worse still.

Yesterday a police car even swerved in front of me so he could maintain his speed and not wreck his motor.

Yes, there's only one solution - our road chiefs have got to have the guts to build worthwhile humps or forget the whole thing.
