A zebra crossing will replace a traffic island on Beulah Hill, following fears over safety and the death of an 86-year-old woman.

Pensioner Giovanna Rout died of her injuries four days after being involved in an accident with a bus, near the junction with Biggin Hill.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at 10.25am on Sunday, March 16.

An inquest into Mrs Rout's death was opened and adjourned on Tuesday, March 25.

An Arriva spokesman said: "While an investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing, Arriva London would like to offer sincere condolences to the lady's family and friends and to assure them we will continue to support the police in their investigations."

Shocked residents say the pensioner, who lived on her own, was a familiar face.

Mrs Saroj Patel, of Beulah Hill, said: "She was very independent and always used to wait at the bus stop. I used to say hello' whenever I saw her."

Croydon Council says the zebra crossing was given the go-ahead in January as part of the 2003/2004 Roads Safety Programme and until this accident there had not been any similar incidents on this part of Beulah Hill.

Anyone with information about the incident should call 020 8284 5988, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
