PLANS to build a major holiday villageon the banks of the Lancaster Canal at Tewitfield are still on the cardsafter councillors re-approved the scheme.

Outline planningpermission for 57 holiday units, shop, restaurant and a fitness centre onland just south of the Longlands Hotel was originally granted in 1997,along with full planning permission for a marina and six more holidayunits.

But because the finer details of the 57-unit schemehave not been submitted within the three-year period as required, applicants Barry Robinson Leisure Ltd, which owns the Longlands Hotel atTewitfield, re-applied to Lancaster City Council for planning consent tobe renewed for a further two years.

A spokesman for thecompany told the Gazette they were pleased the application had beenrenewed, and they did intend going ahead with the project, but werewaiting for a definite date from British Waterways on when work wouldstart on restoring the Northern Reaches of the canal before they startedwork on the marina and holiday village.
