PLANS to build 11 houses at Cark-in-Cartmel have been thrown out - but the developer has been told that future amended plans may be suitable.

Easide Developments Ltd applied to build the properties at the 18th Century listed Cark House, Cark-in-Cartmel.

Development control director Peter Ridgway, of South Lakeland District Council, told the planning committee: " Virtually every single consultee has complained that they have not properly addressed them-selves to converting and developing the site, there are a number of objections that raise issues here."

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings "strongly objected" on the grounds that inappropriate development could "damage" the special interest of the building while the Ancient Monuments Society said it was "appalled" by the proposed use of re-constituted stone, UPVC and the lack of chimneys.

Mr Ridgway said: "As officers, we are very concerned at the proposals which simply fail to take into account many of the issues."

He added: "There is scope here for development but not in the form this has come in."

The plan included the conversion of Cark House to provide two flats on each floor of the three-storey building, with six car parking spaces.

The scheme also proposes a pair of dwellings near the main house with a terrace of four houses, and a terrace of five houses.
