FOOTPATHS in Bromley have been closed after an outbreak of equine herpes.

The contagious disease, which mainly affects the respiratory system, was confirmed by vets last week and two public footpaths were closed on their advice.

In a move reminiscent of the foot-and-mouth outbreak, the paths were shut to prevent the disease spreading.

Although humans cannot be affected, the virus spreads through horses coming into close contact and vets advise infected areas are quarantined.

Footpath 131, from the northern end of Bromley Common to George Lane, and footpath 135, from the east of George Lane to Oakley Road, will be shut until April 7 at the earliest.
