GIVE A LITTLE RESPECT: I write in response to a letter published a week or two ago "Let's keep tabs on yobs". I do not think it is fair to blame the parents of these so-called unruly youths. Yes, there are some parents who do not care, but there are a lot who do. A lot teach their kids right from wrong and to respect people, but they still go on the wrong path. Most youths today do respect people, but if they do not get respect back, they have no places to go. If everyone judges them all the same, how are they expected to end up acting? I think it is society letting these kids down, not the parents.

MATTER OF PRINCIPLE: I agree with Mrs Pope about disabled parking provision in Lewisham (Letters, May 6, 2003). I feel it is being given far too low a priority by Lewisham Council. Irrespective of age, the degree of disability or how long you have had a Blue or Orange Badge, the council will automatically refuse you a disabled parking bay if you do not actually drive. A basic principle behind the Blue Badge scheme is to allow reasonable parking provision to disabled people with mobility difficulties, irrespective of whether they drive or are a car passenger. It is time the council carried out a review of its policy on disabled parking provision.

NEIGHBOURS FROM HELL: My wife and I can sympathise with the couple who had to move out of their flat because of neighbours. We suffered a similar situation for six years during which time we had to put up with loud music, doors banging at all hours and verbal abuse. We saw numerous people councillors, our MP, and also a solicitor but to no avail. We kept diaries for six years on this person but were told the diaries would be useless as evidence in court after three months and it can take anything up to a year to take a case to court. It seems the council has no intention of helping decent people but bend over backwards for others.

NO MORE LIP SERVICE: At last, a newspaper that has the courage to tell it how it is and highlight the hypocrisy of those who pay lip-service to residents' views. Your decision to publish stories with your "What's The Point?" logo is an excellent idea. Well done News Shopper!

KEEP CONTROL: I am writing to you about your report on asylum. I think John Austin is right. Immigration officials are the ones who should make the decision and there should be no right to appeal. If asylum is not kept under control there will be no future for our own children and our grandchildren.
