CHANCELLOR Gordon Brown's budget has been welcomed as "good news" for pensioners and children in Harlow by MP Bill Rammell.
He said the budget means an extra £100 for households with a pensioner aged 80 or over, as well as a £250 nest egg for all newborn babies through the new Child Trust Fund.
The government has also extended the period pensioners in hospital receive full state pension to 52 weeks.
Mr Rammell said: "This is a Labour budget for pensioners and children giving welcome support to our oldest and most vulnerable citizens and help for the next generation of children in Harlow. This extra support for pensioners and children is only possible because of the economic stability this Labour government has delivered.
"Even at a time of global uncertainty, the tough decisions we've taken on the economy over the past six years means this country is better placed than in the past to withstand the global economic downturn and the benefit when the world recovery begins."
