Chobham 7

Richmond 27

Richmond were expecting another easy ride against Chobham, a team they had beaten by a clear 40 points earlier in the season, but a succession of errors under pressure left the score closer than they would have liked.

After a slow start Richmond were the first to strike as they worked space for left wing Chris Conway to crash over for the try.

Despite the dominance of the visitors' pack, they were frequently driven back by some searching line kicking by Chobham's Alex Wood and Steve Keywood.

It was not until Richmond won a scrum 20 yards out and worked the ball to Ross Evans, who sent in Vince Holden for a fine try, that they were rewarded for their efforts.

Richmond came out fired up in the second half and soon Matt Brown, standing in at fly half, broke out of defence and sent flanker Stewart Barlow over for a try.

Chobham continued to plug away and made inroads into the Richmond line, but were caught out when Brown took a tap penalty and darted through to the surprise of the home defence. This break was well supported by Andy Greally, who drove forward and laid the ball on for man-of-the-match Rupert Allhusen to touch down.

Chobham were far from finished and after they had won a lineout 10 yards from the goal area lock Jim Berrigan was driven over by the pack in what was a text book move.

The try of the day came when Brown collected the ball and shaped to feed the backs, but then dummied and kicked high towards the posts. Quickest to the ball, Brown recovered possession, and ran in for a brilliant solo try. Jim Samuel kicked the conversion.

Richmond scorers: tries - Conway, Holden, Barlow, Allhusen, Brown; cons - Samuel.

Following a mid-season break Richmond will return on January 4th to play Dorking at home.
