A STREET in West Wickham will be made safer for pedestrians this summer.

The £460,000 scheme will tackle the problem of leaning walls and slippery pavement in Glebe Way, West Wickham. The walls have deteriorated and safety fencing was put up at the lower end of Glebe Way last year. The road links West Wickham High Street with Hayes. The first phase of the project will cost £165,000.

Bromley Council engineering assistant Paul Redman said: "Design of the wall replacement scheme was initiated last year. Apart from offering a safe structure of improved appearance, the scheme will tackle the problem of slippery paths by directing water draining from the embankment straight into the drainage system before it has the opportunity to pass onto the pavement." Pedes-trians will be re-directed to the pavement on the other side of Glebe Way during construction. Cars should be largely unaffected by the work. Reconstruction of the remaining lengths of wall should be complete by 2000.
