The number of staff at Finchley Memorial Hospital will be increased, and its opening hours extended, with the creation of a £1million walk-in centre, Barnet Primary Care Trust (PCT) revealed this week.
The PCT, which commissions health services across Barnet, believes the move will help reduce the pressure on GP surgeries in the borough, most of which have closed their books to new patients, and the A&E department at Barnet Hospital. The service is ultimately expected to match the 24-hour service at Edgware Community Hospital, where there is a walk-in centre and an urgent treatment centre.
A minor injury unit currently runs at Finchley Memorial, in Granville Road, North Finchley, between 9am and 7pm.
Funding is expected to be approved by the North Central London Strategic Health Authority and Department of Health by the end of August, with the centre opening within 18 months.
