ST ALBANS' hopes of landing the HCPL Two East championship suffered a massive blow on Saturday, August 10, as they lost to bottom side Bishop's Stortford, giving the men from Cricketfield Lane their first victory of the season.
A weakened St Albans team put the hosts into bat and although Jaffer Chaudhry claimed 6-52 and Josh Holt 2-35, an inspired innings of 76 from Ben Debenham saw Bishop's to 194 from their 60 overs.
In reply, the opening partnership of Nick Gilbert (15) and Josh Holt (14) failed to give Saints a solid foundation as Pascal Culverhouse, Roger Edbrooke and Richard O'Toole all departed for single figure scores.
Phil Caley (38) and Jamie Shaw valiantly played out for the draw but Saints' hopes of claiming anything from the match vanished with their dismissal.
