A FOOTBALL team for youngsters in Penge, set up in memory of a teenager who was stabbed to death, has secured £3,700 in lottery funding.

Seymour Villa FC was started last year by Martin King, the former coach of Danny Wandangu, a promising footballer who was killed when he was just 15 years old.

The club competed in the Tandridge League last year and the under-11 team went on to win their championship.

Club chairman Mr King said: "This has been a fantastic first season for us. Some of the kids had never played football before. They've done really well and are a good tribute to Danny.

"The funding is a great boost for the new season."

The cash will be used to buy new equipment, train coaches and join the Crystal Palace Football in the Community Scheme.

Trials will be held on Saturdays throughout June for six to 13-year-olds at Cator Park school, Lennard Road, from 9.45am to noon.

Anyone interested in joining the club as a volunteer, coach or player should call Mr King on 020 8778 8568.
