PENN and Tylers retained the Wycombe Senior Cup with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Chalfont Wasps at Adams Park on Wednesday.

Substitute Ricky Wood glanced in the winner in the 115th minute to settle the cup final that never should have been.

Wasps were knocked out by Penn on penalties in the semi-final but were invited back into the competition after the two other semi-finalists, Downley Albion and Holmer Green were kicked out for fielding ineligible players.

And Wasps looked as though they were going to make the most of their reprieve in a roller-coaster final played out in front of 471 fans at a rain-lashed Adams Park.

After shading an uneventful first half, Wasps looked as though they were going to make it their night when they were awarded a penalty when Jason Weston was sent sprawling in the box by Guy Walters' challenge.

But Weston rolled the resulting penalty wide and it proved to be an expensive miss when Penn opened the scoring with just ten minutes remaining in this all-Hellenic League clash.

Gavin Groves escaped down the flank and crossed into the middle where Paul Catlin was on hand to wrongfoot the keeper and turn the ball in.

But just as it looked as though the cup was on its way to Penn, Raich Fraser took the game into extra time with a stunning 89th minute leaveller.

He drilled the ball into the top of the net from the edge of the box after latching onto a neat backheel from man-of-the-match Marcus Fearon.

And Chalfont then took the lead in the first period of extra time.

Penn keeper Danny Wright spilled a low cross from the right on the greasy surface and Mickey Poole turned the ball to put the Wasps in front.

But the lead lasted just five minutes.

Penn, who had played a vital league game against champions-elect Quarry Nomads just 24 hours earlier, pulled on all their inner strength and the dangerous Groves headed in their equaliser from a tantalising left wing cross.

The lottery of a penalty shootout was looming when, with just five minutes left on the clock, Penn pumped a hopeful free-kick into the box and Wood got the all-important touch to send it past Wasps keeper Chris Burton to give Penn the Cup for the second year running.

Delighted Penn boss Chris Allen said: "I'm proud of every one of them. I cannot speak highly enough of them. They were magnificent.

"Having played just 24 hours earlier, the last thing we needed was extra-time but they got the energy and determination from somewhere to win it."
