CELEBRATIONS for the Golden Jubilee and the Commonwealth Games united hundreds of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides.

One thousand girls gathered at the Lakes School, Troutbeck Bridge, with 200 leaders, for a fun-packed day of crafts, games and entertainment - called Jubico 2002.

Although rain prevented the girls from enjoying outdoor activities, there was plenty to amuse them indoors.

Rainbows made crowns decorated with beads, Brownies crafted fairies, and Guides decorated polystyrene eggs with sequins, made calico bags, painted glass and sampled nail and hair art.

After lunch Broughton-in-Furness entertainer Pete Thompson, as seen on television's Stars in Their Eyes, had the girls dancing in the aisles during two musical concerts.

The girls also enjoyed circus skills workshops, bouncy castles, parachute games, and had the chance to stroke and have their picture taken with owls from the Corio Birds of Prey Care Centre, at High Bentham - a popular feature, thanks to the success of the Harry Potter books.

"They really had an absolutely wonderful day," said Jenny Gilfellon, county commissioner for Cumbria South Guides Association.

She thanked the Lakes School, the school caretaker, all the Guiders on the committee, and everybody who helped make the day such a success.
