February 6, 2001 12:03: A SUPPORT service for family and friends of prison inmates has been established in Bromleys Community House, in South Street, Bromley.
The service is part of Outmates an organisation which provides information and advice on visiting prisons, financial problems, prison regimes, what to tell children and how to cope with the separation brought about by imprisonment.
Outmates project director Sandy Greenfield said: There is no formal access to relevant information by families and the stigma of having a loved one in prison leads to social isolation and exclusion not knowing who to talk to or where to turn.
Outmates runs a 24-hour telephone helpline and self-help groups and organises home visits, physical support at police stations, courts and prisons, and social events and outings for families.
