SERVICES at libraries, day centres and schools across the borough were hit by strike action as Unison members demanded more cash.

Hundreds of public sector workers joined thousands of colleagues from across Greater London, in strike action over "intolerable" levels of London weighting pay.

Council workers across all 33 boroughs are demanding London weighting of £4,000 a year on top of their basic salaries, to address the extra cost of living in the capital.

Picket lines were formed outside the Civic Centre, in Stockwell Close, Bromley, as well as at libraries and council offices.

A delegation of strikers attended the main demonstration in central London.

Four Bromley libraries were closed, services at two special needs units were halted and social services operated on emergency cover only.

Council chief personnel officer Susan Ryall said: "We must look at the things we can do to ease the situation but we don't think a blanket increase is necessarily the best thing."

Bromley Unison branch secretary Glenn Kelly said: "There was massive support from both workers and the public for this strike.

"We will be meeting for talks but if no progress is made there could be more action to come."
