February 6, 2001 11:20: A 62-YEAR-OLD Bickley woman smashed a glass in the face of a lady who dared to talk about her sons love life, Croydon Crown Court was told last week.

Pensioner, June Green, of Thornet Wood Road, Bickley was found guilty of causing actual bodily harm last Thursday after the jury was told how she may have left Elizabeth Bugden scarred for life.

The court heard how the pensioner drank three vodka and orange drinks before she struck out at Mrs Bugden in Bickley Working Mens Club last June.

The two were sitting on the top floor of the crowded club exchanging words over an affair the older womans son was allegedly having, when Greens temper boiled over.

I didnt want to discuss his relationship with a stranger, she said.

An argument ensued and then the violence exploded leaving drinkers horrified as glass smashed and blood flowed.

Still bearing the one-and-a-half-inch scar on the left side of her face Mrs Bugden denied she had been acting aggressively towards Green during the slanging match.

I felt a blow to my face and she grabbed me by the hair.

There was blood everywhere. I knew something terrible had happened, said the victim who was treated at Bromley and East Grinstead Hospitals.

In her defence Green said she had wanted to leave when the fight broke out.

She said: I bent down to pick up my handbag and move away. I threw my drink at her but she came forward on to the glass. The glass broke and cut my hand. She was still coming forward so I grabbed her hair.

The court heard Green was previously of good character.

She has been bailed to return for sentencing on February 23.
