YOUNGSTERS at a Chislehurst primary have good reason to turn up to school to see their own handiwork outside.

Teachers are proud of pupils who designed the colourful new Red Hill Primary School gates.

The youngsters worked with sculptor Chris Plowman, who has made gates for schools all over Britain.

The Hampshire-based metalworker spent a day with pupils talking over ideas and designs.

Then, under the watchful eye of art teacher Amanda Williams, they set about putting their plans down on paper. Using galvanised steel, Mr Plowman fitted the designs two weeks ago.

Headteacher Elaine Alford said: "They are fantastic and unique to us. The gates say something about the school and will stand for generations. The children are extremely proud of them and rightfully so."

Other schools have already inquired with a view to copying the £3,000 scheme paid from school funds.
