STRINGS are the thing for pupils at Mandeville Primary School who are learning to play everything from the violin to the cello.
The school in Mandeville Drive, St Albans, is taking part in a pilot scheme run by the Government to provide children with wider opportunities in music, particularly with string instruments.
Hertfordshire is one of six authorities chosen to champion the pilot and budding young musicians at Mandeville now have the chance to play the violin, viola, cello and mini bass.
Hertfordshire County Council music adviser John Witchell said: "I think it's a wonderful opportunity for the children.
"They are getting a lot out of it and are very enthusiastic. It's not just about enjoying music, it's also about developing social and personal skills."
The year-long project began in September and is run by Hertfordshire Music Service.
