Bexley's Women's Aid held a special day at the Danson Boathouse in Welling to consider what it had achieved since being founded in 1975.

Erith and Thamesmead MP John Austin attended the event and announced he had tabled an early day motion in the House of Commons expressing support for the group.

The charity's landlords, London and Quadrant (L&Q), also promised to help the group expand and improve its three refuges.

Chairman Avril Newman said: "We had an absolutely brilliant day and were flabbergasted when we heard John Austin had tabled the motion.

"And it really is good news L&Q said it hopes to provide us with additional premises."

The group's full and part-time staff look after up to eight women and 20 children a time in its Bexley safe houses.

Any women who are experiencing violence at home and need help, should call the Bexley Women's Aid helpline on 0208 301 1536.
