Borehamwood could get a £100,000 skateboard park as part of council plans to spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on entertainment and sports facilities in the borough.

Hertsmere Borough Council's ruling executive agreed last week week to put aside £50,000 for a skateboard park, £250,000 for sports pavilions and pitches, £350,000 for The Radlett Centre and £400,000 for new equipment at leisure centres.

Senior landscape officer Dave Clarke said Borehamwood, and in particular Maxwell Park, was being considered as a possible location for a skateboard park.

Ramps and other equipment could be installed at Maxwell Park, where a hard surface has already been laid down for skaters to use.

Mr Clarke said the number of skaters who gathered in the car park outside The Venue, in Elstree Way, proved there was a demand for such a facility.

"They are always here, sun or rain. Most of them are quite well-behaved, but all they are doing is causing a nuisance where they are now."

If the full council, as expected, ratifies the executive's recommended £50,000 allocation, the council will seek a further £50,000 for skate facilities through grant applications.

Mr Clarke hopes a steering group will be formed next month, to enable schools, the police, residents and councillors to give their views on the idea.

The council also plans to refurbish sports pavilions in Borehamwood's Brookmeadow, Tempsford and Kenilworth parks and improve pitches, with £250,000 to be provided either this year or over a few years.

The Radlett Centre's manager, Greg Dexter, said he would welcome a £350,000 grant for improving, among other things, disabled access and technical facilities. "It is a very exciting project and we have got our fingers crossed."

The funding package relates to cash which has to be spent on buildings or facilities, rather than council services.
