As with most long-term objectives, getting society's youth interested and committed to tackling green issues is half the battle in achieving environmental aims.

One initiative hoping to do just that is a new children's club, which will aim to educate youngsters about wildlife, encouraging them to respect the environment from an early age.

The club will be officially launched

at the Bird Festival in South Norwood Country Park on Sunday March 16 from 2pm to 4pm.

The day is aimed at children aged between eight and 12 years and parents. It features a guided tour of the park and the chance to find out more about the new Wildlife Watch group.

The group will meet every second Sunday of the month at the park's visitor centre. Events are free and last two hours.

A number of subjects will be covered by the group. These include the history of Country Park, hay-making and learning about animals and insects.

Wildlife Watch is being launched, further to the appearance of two, rare long-eared owls. It is the junior branch of the Wildlife Trust.

Councillor Raj Chandarana, Croydon's cabinet minister for culture, said: "South Norwood Country Park is a great place to appreciate nature."

He added that the council are "committed to helping residents make the most of the beautiful wildlife that inhibits the park".
