THE British National Party has not put forward any candidates for next month's Lancaster City Council elections.

Rumours earlier this year that the ultra-right wing party planned to fight local elections in Lancaster sparked a wave of outrage.

But by Tuesday's deadline for budding councillors to declare their intention to stand in the May 1 city/parish elections, there was no BNP interest.

The council has received more than 180 nominations from contenders.

Both the Labour and Green parties have put forward more than 40 candidates in a bid to win power at the hung' council, with the Conservative Party not far behind with 34 nominations.

The Morecambe Bay Independents are offering 20 candidates, while there are more than 25 other Independents and one from the UK Independence Party. The Liberal Democrats have 15 nominations, and the Socialist Alliance has one.
