AFTER the Ashes debacle in Australia, High Wycombe Cricket Club are trying to ensure young cricketers remain in the game and good cricketing prospects are not lost.

The London Road-based club are putting in place a real academy structure to bridge the gap between the colts players and the senior side.

And academy director Paul Woodroffe believes the structure can help colts players go through the ranks and become senior cricketers.

He said: "We've had Paul Sawyer, Jamie Benning and Matt Eyles all come through the colts system.

"We've had a good history of bringing players through.

"Lord McLaurin said not enough cricket is played in the schools and there are a lot of others who go to university and leave the area so the club falls down there.

"But the academy is seen as a progression for those who leave the colts.

"We're here to help develop them and get into the senior squad."

"Even after the successes of 2002 we do not intend to become complacent. A 16-man squad was required last year and with every one fit and available next season there will be fierce competition for the Warriors starting line-up.

"The academy squad is an exciting progression and the lads will be developed in accordance with the team and work ethics already inherent within the club."

The academy squad will train and work with the senior players and have regular one-to-one coaching with the club's top premier players. They will also be encouraged to compete in the senior league sides and put pressure on the senior squad members.

Wycombe are now seeking a sponsor for the academy. Any business interested in the benefits can call the club on 01494 537878.
