AN UNEMPLOYED decorator from Gravesend overdosed on 40 headache tablets after an argument with his ex-wife, an inquest heard.
Gravesend Coroner's Court heard how Antony Swanson, aged 36, of Jubilee Crescent, was found unconscious on February 4, after taking Co-proxamol pills and drinking eight cans of cider.
The court heard how he had a row with his ex-wife earlier that day over contact with his children and had started drinking heavily.
His girlfriend, Mandy Edwards, of Hampton Crescent, called the emergency services when she could not wake him up at home and she saw the pill packets. He died at Darent Valley Hospital.
The court heard Mr Swanson had twice tried to kill himself because he was suffering from depression.
His sister, Judith Swanson, also of Jubilee Crescent, told the court her brother would "occasionally drink heavily", but had become happier after starting a new relationship.
North Kent Coroner Roger Hatch said: "It is apparent from the evidence Mr Swanson and his ex-wife had considerable problems and Mr Swanson was suffering from depression."
After recording a verdict of suicide, Mr Hatch expressed his sympathy for the family.
