VOLUNTEERS are being sought to trigger pensioners' memories and help them gain more self-esteem.
The Older People's Network, Penge and Anerley, trains volunteers to use objects from yesteryear, such as old fashioned sweets and magazines, to awaken memories in isolated pensioners and Alzheimer suffers.
The Time Honoured Reminiscence Project bases sessions around themes such as the Second World War and old school days.
Retired nurse, Joy Hall, of Elmers End Road, Penge, set up the project eight years ago.
"I've been into many nursing homes where clients are looking at walls, but people developing Alzheimer's are more likely to suffer from depression if they have nothing to do," she said.
"Once they hear the old music, their feet start tapping."
Mrs Hall emphasises the importance of allowing older people to share their memories.
"It validates life experiences and increases a sense of identity. Most people in nursing homes have services given to them, but memories are something they can donate."
