A NEW public area in Penge has won a prestigious award for its "outstanding" environmental design.

The centrepiece of the £24,000 Penge Triangle is a clock-shelter with a glass canopy which is surrounded by trees, modern lighting and special paving.

The inspiration for the canopy's design, by Philip Cave Associates, came from the wings of the pterodactyl dinosaur, which can be seen at Crystal Palace Park.

The public square received a Civic Trust award commendation as an outstanding example of environmental design, also of benefit to the community.

Councillor George Taylor, cabinet member for the environment, said: "We are delighted Penge has won a design award and are proud of what has been achieved for everyone.

"It is one of a series of major improvements made by the council and retailers to make Penge an attractive shopping centre."

Penge Triangle, which opened in July last year, is the third of three squares built by Bromley Council in Penge High Street, with funding from the Crystal Palace Partnership.

Arpley Square and Empire Square make up the other two designs all three are connected by the theme of time.
