ARMED robbers struck at a pub and sprayed the assistant manager with a toxic substance before grabbing the weekend's takings.

The raid occurred in the car park of the Teasel Hungry Horse pub in Burnt Ash Lane, Bromley, on Monday last week at 10.45am.

The 38-year-old victim was hit with an object on the back of the head before being sprayed with what he described as a perfume-like liquid.

Two robbers -- one wielding a knife -- demanded the cash as he was leaving to take it to the post office.

He had a canvas bag containing the money handcuffed and strapped to his wrists.

The bag -- holding a substantial haul of cash ---was cut from his wrist with what police think was a sheath-knife.

The victim was temporary blinded and was treated at Bromley Hospital for burning to the eyes but did not suffer any permanent injuries.

DS Tony Blake of Beckenham Robbery Squad said: "It's a very serious crime and quite unusual. It's a very busy road and right on the bend so somebody must have seen something. We are appealing for any witnesses to come forward."

One bystander reported seeing two white men fleeing in a white Mazda van.

One is said to be 40, 5ft 10ins and stocky. He was wearing dark clothing and a dark woolen hat. Police have no description of his accomplice.
