ISTEAD RISE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

The speaker at the February meeting was Mr Black who told us that after working as a civil servant for 34 years he had a dramatic change of direction by joining the Association of British Investigators - hence "from public servant to Private Eye". He was influenced by Mr Pinkerton who went to America and became Deputy Sheriff of Chicago and ran a successful business as a private detective.

Mr Black related many amusing instances he encountered during the course of his work such as chasing a drunken milkman and confronting violent wife beaters in order to pass injunctions and of some interesting cases he attended in court.

The vote of thanks was given by June Chapple. A reminder was given that the District Pancake Race will be on Tuesday, March 4 at Chalk Village Hall at 11.30am. during social time members enjoyed a lively game of hangman'.

Our next meeting will be on March 11 at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall, Istead Rise, when Mr Parkin will be describing "Artistic Barcelona". It is also the Spring Show, members and visitors are always welcome. For further information contact Priscilla Herbert on 01474 832460.
