Regarding your editorial 'Give our kids a sporting chance' (June 20), we would support an initiative to build a synthetic soccer pitch in Meadow Park. We also support council plans to develop the common land off Potters Lane, welcoming the provision of play facilities for children and teenagers.

Recently we received a letter from a local action group opposing the latter plans, which noted the potential of the site to be abused by drug-takers and hooligans. Whilst understanding their expressed concerns, I would note that their argument would appear to be that we cannot have facilities for our children (which includes teenagers) because the local police force cannot cope with any lawbreaking.

I believe it would be better if we expressed concern at a perceived lack of policing, rather than objected to an increase in facilities for children and young people in the town. Isn't the alternative terribly defeatist and NIMBY?
