A RECOMMENDATION not to take further action to deal with speeding motorists using a residential street as a rat-run has been rejected by councillors.

Council officers said Wellington and Nelson Roads in Wanstead were a low priority, despite 200 drivers found to be breaking the 30mph speed limit in the roads every day during a recent survey.

People living in the street complained they were not consulted on the problem and now councillors have agreed to carry out more research.

Speaking at an Area One meeting on monday, resident Peter Hodgkinson said: "The monitoring equipment was put in the wrong place. The results of the survey were flawed.

"Two hundred cars a day exceed the speed limit and that makes up 15 per cent of the traffic.

"If there are 100 people in a room and 85 people get home to bed and 15 people die does that make it right?"

But lead highways officer Steve Grayer insisted the road did not meet the criteria for money to be spent on it.

"The road ranks 114th in priority list for the borough's roads and we only have funding for eight or ten," he said.

But meeting chairman Cllr Chris Cummins said: "We agree that consulation with residents will happen before any action is recommended."
