The first images have been released of planned housing on a protected green space.

The owner of Evergreen Field in High Street, Wanstead, Dalco Developments hopes to build seven houses, two flats and two shops on the site.

The company has released an artist's impression of what the development would look like on the site, which has been closed to the public for 15 years.

The site is protected under Redbridge Council's open space policy and the authority has previously said housing would not be permitted.

The Wanstead Society, which was formed to fight development on the field 15 years ago have submitted alternative proposals, including a community garden.

Dalbir Singh Sanger said: "It really is up to the public what they want.

"These plans will not block the church being seen from the road and will add something to the community.

"The space in the middle can legally be used for 14 markets a day and it will include a nice garden for people to sit in.

"I need to make money off the site and we can't leave it empty.

"If you go down the road a little bit there is a five-storey block of flats. There is space on the land for 50 flats, we are only proposing nine units.

"If these plans aren't accepted, we will just continue fighting with the public for the next 20 years and going round in circles."

Mr Sanger is meeting with council officers tomorrow to discuss the plans.
