A zebra crossing will be installed on a busy road crossed by hundreds of schoolchildren after funding was found.

At a meeting last Tuesday, councillors from the area two committee agreed to commit £15,000 towards the installation costs of the crossing close to the Orchard estate in Broadmead Road, Woodford Green.

They planned to ask Redbridge Council’s cabinet for the remaining £20,000 needed to make the scheme a reality but the remainder of the money will now be provided under an existing scheme.

Ian Bond, deputy leader of the council, said: “The good news is that, in discussion with our Highways officers, we have identified a budget for ‘safer routes to school’ which has an unspent balance.

“Because the recent survey showed so many school children crossing Broadmead Road we can use it to supplement the Area Committee budget to complete the scheme.

“This is excellent news and means that we’re now planning to get the crossing installed at this local danger spot as soon as possible – hopefully at the end of March once we are into the school holidays.”
