Young musicians with an interest in woodwind instruments are to benefit from a London-wide £100,000 grant from the Mayor of London's Music Fund.

Redbridge Music Service have been awarded a share of the grant money and will be partnering with Waltham Forest Music Service and The London Chamber Orchestra to work towards improving progression routes for woodwind players.

In 2011 the Music Service in Fencepiece Road, Hainault, was threatened with cuts as Redbridge Council ordered savings of £635,000 over three years as part of its programme of budget cuts.

But in May 2012 the service received a £1.8million grant from the Arts Council enabling the service to continue providing children with the chance to learn an instrument.

Cllr Alan Weinberg, cabinet member for Children's Services, said: "Any income generated for the Music Service is great news.

"I am pleased for the service and it is great news for the youngsters who will benefit from the money."

The Fund is an independent charity aiming to increase musical opportunities for hundreds of children and young people across the capital.

It is expected the new partnerships formed across London will reach 1,000 children by the end of 2014, who will gain experience of working and performing with professional musicians.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London and patron of the fund said: "Learning a musical instrument can have a powerful impact on a child's life, helping in their social, emotional and academic development.

"The Fund is enriching the lives of hundreds of children and also making sure London remains the top city in the world for all kinds of music."
