A youth centre widely used by residents of all ages was suddenly closed this week because the potentially harmful Legionella bacteria was discovered there, it has emerged.

Redbridge Council suddenly shut down Wanstead Youth Centre on Monday, previously saying it was due to "emergency maintenance works" following a health and safety issue.

And the authority has now confirmed to the Guardian that the bacteria is the reason for the closure, which was found following a routine test of the building's water system.

Under the right conditions and temperatures Legionella can grow in heating systems and plumbing.

If it develops to dangerous levels people can then catch Legionnaires' disease by inhaling the bacteria from droplets in the air.

An outbreak of the pneumonia-type illness from a cooling tower in Edinburgh last summer killed two people and hospitalised dozens.

But a council spokesman moved to reassure residents and said the bacteria was low risk if handled correctly.

He said: "As a result of a routine test on the 3 May it was discovered that Legionella bacteria were present in parts of the centre’s water system.

"As soon as the Youth Service received the result yesterday the decision was made to shut the centre, with immediate effect.

"Legionella bacteria are commonly found in water systems and are considered to be low risk when managed correctly.

"There are tried and tested methods to deal with the bacteria and these will be employed at the centre.

"The affected parts of the water system will now being treated and a rigorous programme of monthly monitoring will be continue to be implemented."

He added: "Those using the centre have been contacted about the situation.

"Wherever possible, the Youth Service has provided support and advice to the user groups to look for alternative venues that are appropriate."

The site, in Elmcroft Avenue, provides a variety of activities for young people but also has a gym and sports hall used by Wanstead residents of all ages in the wider community.

Those who attend exercise classes at the centre have been told it will be closed for a minimum of two weeks.

However the council has warned that the closure may be longer, but it hoped to reopen the site as soon as possible.
