Our June meeting was a most enjoyable History Ramble around Alcester, being guided, informed and entertained by two members of the Alcester Heritage Trust.
Not only were we shown the notable buildings and told of the history of the area, but we were also given a tour of the Alcester museum, video of Roman Alcester, and were introduced to a ‘Roman soldier’ with all of his armour and equipment which had to be carried with him on the 25-mile marches he had to do each day.
The museum is full of information, but is small enough even for young children to visit and enjoy, and local museums need all the support we can give them. The tea rooms in Alcester are close at hand too. This would be an ideal way to spend an afternoon of the school holidays with children or grandchildren.
Our 2013-14 season will start on Tuesday, September 10 when Max Keen will give an illustrated talk about Sir Francis Drake. The meeting will be at Webheath Village Hall at 7.30pm. Mr Keen is always a lively and informative speaker, and members and visitors will be welcome to come and enjoy the meeting.
